Computational Biology: Overview. Computational Biology is a process of application and development of theoretical approaches as well as mathematical methods, computational modelling techniques and data analytics to study biological, behavioural, social and ecological systems. The module will be taught following an "algorithmic approach," demonstrating that addressing problems in computational biology requires a diverse range of theoretical concepts and algorithms, making it an exciting and rapidly evolving field for computer scientists. Module aims This course covers the algorithmic and machine learning foundations of computational biology combining theory with practice. We cover both foundational topics in computational biology, and current research frontiers. We study fundamental techniques, recent advances in the field, and work directly with current large-scale biological datasets. The research group Computational Biology develops computational models that help to obtain qualitative and quantitative knowledge of diseases, biomedical processes and structures.
